5.Algeria. The nation managed two silver medals at this year's Games. Both came from Taoufik Makhloufi, who came second in both the men's 800 and 1,500 meters finals.

4. Cote d'Ivoire made history at this year's Olympics with the arrival of the country's first ever gold medal. Cheikh Salah Junior Cisse's gold in the men's 80 kg taekwondo finals, coupled with Ruth Marie Christelle Gbagbi's bronze in the women's 67 kg category saw the West African nation finish the highest in its history - fourth in Africa.

3. Ethiopia. The East African long-distance heavyweights of Ethiopia may not have enjoyed the best of Olympics this year, but can take pride in the way in which their one gold medal was won. Almaz Ayana's incredible record-breaking run in the 10,000m led to the country's one gold, but a further 2 silver and 5 bronze medals left Ethiopia with a totof of eight.

4. South Africa will count Rio 2016 as a successful outing after capturing 10 medals in total, the third time out of 19 Games they have done so. The gold hunt was led by a dominance of the 800m where Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya dominated. Six silver and two bronze mean the Rainbow Nation finished second in Africa overall.

1. Kenya. The East Africans may have won more medals overall in London, but took home just two gold on that occasion. This time round, a haul of six gold, six silver and one bronze meant 13 medals in total, but good enough to finish top of the continent and 15th overall, globally. That's enough to take top spot on our list this week.
